At our next We the People Club meeting, we will be addressing one of the most urgent and heartbreaking issues of our time: child and human trafficking. Often described by federal agencies and international organizations as a “hidden crime,” trafficking continues to grow both in the United States and globally, affecting vulnerable men, women, and children in every community.
Recent data highlights the scale of the crisis. The U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics reported that federal prosecutions for human trafficking increased by more than 70% between 2013 and 2023, reflecting both growing awareness and a rising number of identified cases. In 2023 alone, thousands of trafficking-related referrals were made to U.S. attorneys, showing the expanding workload for law enforcement agencies.
Globally, the scope is even more staggering. Estimates suggest that tens of millions of people are currently living in conditions of modern slavery, including forced labor and sexual exploitation. Experts warn that trafficking generates over $150 billion annually in illegal profits worldwide, making it one of the most lucrative criminal enterprises on the planet.
Child exploitation is especially alarming. The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children has reported hundreds of thousands of tips annually related to suspected child sexual exploitation and trafficking, with numbers rising sharply in recent years due to increased online grooming and digital recruitment.
These statistics represent more than numbers—they represent real lives, families, and children whose voices are too often unheard.
Special Screening: Sound of Freedom
At our upcoming meeting, we will also be screening the powerful film Sound of Freedom, which brings national attention to the realities of child trafficking and the efforts being made to combat it. The film serves as a reminder that awareness is only the first step—action, vigilance, and community engagement are essential to protecting the most vulnerable among us.
We invite the community to join us for this important discussion, to learn more about the warning signs of trafficking, and to consider how each of us can play a role in prevention and awareness.
Together, we can help shine light into the darkest corners of this global crisis.
