Parents send their children to school expecting that classrooms will be places of learning, safety, and trust. In recent years, however, Charlotte County residents have watched with growing alarm as multiple teachers, counselors, and school employees have been arrested and charged with crimes involving sexual misconduct and abuse of minors. The latest case, involving a Charlotte County school employee arrested in 2026, has once again forced our community to ask difficult questions about accountability and transparency.
These incidents are not mere scandals or political talking points. They involve real children, real families, and lifelong trauma. Every allegation of child molestation or sexual abuse within our schools represents a devastating breach of trust that extends far beyond the individual accused. Parents have every right to demand answers about how these situations developed, whether warning signs were missed, and what safeguards are being implemented to protect students in the future.
What is perhaps equally disturbing is the deafening silence from many members of the Charlotte County School Board. As several board members campaign for reelection or pursue other public offices, one would expect unequivocal condemnation of the abuse of children and a strong commitment to ensuring student safety. Instead, the public has largely witnessed silence.
Leadership requires more than smiling campaign photographs and promises during election season. It requires moral courage. School board members should be publicly addressing these incidents, reassuring parents, demanding accountability, and outlining concrete measures to prevent future abuse. Remaining silent while children have allegedly been victimized is not leadership—it is avoidance.
This silence sends a troubling message to parents and students: that protecting institutional reputations may be more important than openly confronting uncomfortable truths. Whether intentional or not, the absence of strong public statements leaves many residents wondering whether elected officials truly understand the gravity of these crimes.
Approximately one week after the most recent Charlotte County School District employee was arrested, the We the People Podcast interviewed Charlotte County resident and voter Sam Terpinger to discuss the issue and the concerns shared by many parents throughout the county. The conversation focused on accountability, transparency, and the responsibility of elected officials to speak honestly about threats to student safety.
This is not about politics. It should not matter whether someone is a Democrat, Republican, or independent. Protecting children transcends political affiliation. Every parent deserves confidence that school officials, administrators, and elected representatives will act decisively when allegations of sexual abuse arise.
Parents should also recognize that predators often exploit positions of authority and trust. Schools must continue strengthening background investigations, mandatory reporting requirements, employee training, and oversight mechanisms. Equally important, students must be educated about boundaries, inappropriate behavior, and how to report concerns without fear of retaliation.
The community has an important role to play as well. Silence protects predators. Speaking out protects children.
