Pay Now, Regret Later: The 20-Year $901M Commitment

pay now regret later

The commissioners have just voted to obligate the Charlotte County taxpayers to a 20 year “deal” costing an eye-watering 901 million dollars with hope of getting the public to buy into their vision for the county.

They want us to vote for their “Plans” going forward with no going back.  For the record, all the “plans” now cost double over what is budgeted when finally delivered.

The previous 6 year plan, successful at some level, did not give us something of permanence that the people could use as an inducement for better things to come.

What is wrong with a 4 year plan?  If the cost to put it on the ballot is the answer, I say it gives us the biggest bang for the buck.

No commissioner presently elected will be around in 20 years, or possibly 6, or 4.  What the commissioners (all 5) have done, is to obligate the country to a “mortgage” few understand or be willing to pay.

The idea that this is a “good deal” for the taxpayers is a bald faced lie and the sooner the public sees it, the better.  I see all this as a plan to deny the public their right to make alternate plans, should they be needed at some future date.

To quote Casey Stengal, NY Mets manager when he saw the team for the first time: “Can’t anyone here play this game.”  “Hell hath no wrath like the scorning the plans of the CC Commissioners.”
